![]() Scientist says we are only born with a fear of loud noises and a fear of falling. All other fears are learnt behaviours. In my work as a hypnotherapist, I often work with individuals who have fears through a learnt behaviour. The trigger doesn’t always have to be a physical experience. An example of this is the client that comes to me with the ‘What if’ or ‘I can’t because’ or the parent saying to the child ‘this happened to my friend’. The seed is then sown. With it being bonfire night there were a lot of loud fireworks going off. I discovered that my own year old dog had a fear of them. I do not know how, as I have only had her eight months. Initially on the first night, I think we probably heightened her fear by making a lot of fuss. Basically praising and therefore heightening her negative awareness of the noises. So what did I do? I encouraged her to relax in the situation. No I didn’t give her hypnotherapy. We used a plug in diffuser and a jacket called a thunder jacket (reminded me of the hug in mug advert). When working with a client I find the art of relaxation gets bypassed and the ‘fight or flight’ controlled by our brains has kicked in before it actually needs to. There must be a lot of prehistoric mammals (otherwise known as memories) out there chasing us. Working with my clients I know in heart that I cannot undo the past. What I work with them on is making ‘the now’ a moment they can control. A client recently came to me for a fear of loud noises, bad weather etc. I recently received a text from them telling me they’d heard a clap of thunder and jumped like any of us would, but that was all and had stayed perfectly calm after. I recently watched a fantastic video on UPWorthy about Happiness and being in the moment. Make 10 mins to watch it, it’s an amazing video. I love the little girl telling the story about standing at a door and then using her imagination to describe what may behind. How about closing your eyes right now and imagining opening that door. What colour door is it? s it a cool metal handle or just one you push open? I wonder where you’ve gone to? Whilst you're there really experience what’s behind it. If it’s outside feel the touch of nature. Wind, sun, water. If you’re in a room look around at the old photos, your favourite comfy chair. Who knows what’s in that room? Even allow your mind to subconsciously pick up and touch objects. Well done you just experienced self hypnosis. Take 10 mins after reading this to watch this great little YouTube video. I think you’ll enjoy it. http://www.upworthy.com/clear-your-next-10-minutes-because-this-video-could-change-how-happy-you-are-with-your-entire-week. For more information CLICK For bookings CLICK

![]() How many times have you sat in a meeting at the office and, in your mind, been on that last beach holiday? Or walking around a local supermarket, remembering the last time you picked up that certain food and reminiscing about a night you had with friends or family. When people ask me to describe how hypnotherapy feels, I usually describe a daydream-like state as one of my comparisons. In a deeply relaxed state, the mind can be allowed to focus on making sense of everything that is going on around us. Kids are great daydreamers. I am sure most of you remember playground games, where you lived in a castle or were being chased by a dragon. I am not saying you have to go back to that daydream childlike state, but wouldn’t it be great to be able to take yourself away from it all, for a short period of time, to sort out what’s going on in the subconscious mind. You can with hypnotherapy. Think of it like a giving yourself a bit of ‘ME’ time. Pure self indulgence. Why not pop along to my show at the Chequer Mead on the 24th of September where I’ll be talking about taking ‘A Weight off your Mind’ or come and see me at the Sussex Women’s show on the 27th and 28th of September. If you would like to know more about healthy eating and how changing your mind about food can help you lose weight. Relationships are more than this. We have relationships with all those around us, friends, family, the shopkeeper from the local shop that hands you your newspaper each day, and many others. If I asked you to create a circle with ten layers in it, each one numbered by how important you are compared to other people, I wonder where you would place yourself in comparison to them? Let me give you an example. You have been in a relationship for many years, so you would place yourself on the same circle as your partner. In a social situation you feel inferior to the opposite sex, reluctant to join in conversations, worried that everyone will laugh at some incorrect comment you may make. How about allowing hypnotherapy to help with gaining a whole new perspective on your social status? Some of the areas I have worked on with individuals are: Feeling an equal partner in a relationship Helping you to appreciate your own position in society. Everyone is important, no matter what or who they are. Helping you to open up, allowing other near them for future relationships, whether this is for friendship or a sexual relationship So let’s start today building that positive relationship you have with YOU first right now. Book in for my ‘A Weight of your Mind’ interactive weight loss seminar at the Chequer Mead Arts Centre in East Grinstead on the 24th of September. I’m giving a free group weight loss hypnotherapy session at the end of the event. http://www.beckywells.com/a-weight-off-your-mind-at-chequer-mead.html Or come and visit me at the Sussex Women’s Show, Brighton Racecourse on the 27th to 28th September. I will also be giving two 20 minute talks at this show. Now some of you may know I was brought up in a small town called Crawley. My youth was spent playing in the local woods; climbing trees, playing hide and seek and generally enjoying myself without the aid of a computer console. What do I think this helped with as an adult? Well the greatest dreams were created in those times about my future. That local forest became my Narnia. As I stepped into the entrance of the park nothing else really mattered. We’d find trees to swing from and like elves from the forest other children would join in with the fun and games. We never thought about being bored, we didn’t have time. We were busy chasing away the fire breathing dragons or hiding from the invisible witch that lived down the black alley. Children these days are not always allowed to set their imagination free. As a hypnotherapist the daydream is a powerful tool. During a hypnotherapy session a client is encouraged into a relaxed daydream type state. Whilst relaxed the therapist encourages them to change how they view certain feelings or events in their life to a more positive way. So if you’re off with your kids this school holiday, why not relive your childhood? Show your kids how a forest such as Tilgate Park (http://www.crawley.gov.uk/pw/Leisure_and_Culture/Tilgate_Park/index.htm) in Crawley can be the place where their character is formed and their sense of independence is encouraged. And if you slay a few of your own dragons whilst you’re there, even better. With all my clients, whether they are hypnotherapy, Personal Training or sports massage clients, I try to put myself in their shoes, so to speak. No I don’t have some strange foot fetish before you start to wonder, I mean in the metaphorical sense. Let’s take, for example, a highly skilled executive that comes to see me. When I first met him he came across as bold, confident and sometimes quite abrupt. What I might find underneath is an unconfident introvert inside an extrovert shell. What I try to do with my skills is unravel the layers of protection that have been built up, a bit like an onion with its outer layer thickened by the environment. I help take the layers off one by one until I reach the centre, then, and almost as important, I help them to use those layers to make something even better. So if you would like a hand unpeeling that onion, I have the utensils to give you a hand. I’ll even give you a tissue if it makes your eyes water. As we know teardrops are made of 1% water ![]() If I ask you to look in a mirror and tell me who you saw looking back, I wonder what you would say? When I look in the mirror I see a person who loves life, has a thirst for helping others and is willing to take every opportunity thrown at her. When I have asked my clients in the past they have told me they’ve seen a person with low self esteem, bullied, or with no love of life in it’s current state. What would I like to do with that reflection, using hypnotherapy and other skills combined? Allow you to stand there staring back at your reflection and say “wow you’re amazing” If you want to step through the looking glass, give me a call. Who knows where that first glance may lead you? Becky www.beckywells.com 07801 941949 becky@beckywells.com ![]() I imagine a fair few people will have been sharing cards, flowers and token gifts with loved ones this Valentine’s Day. We wanted to make it a little bit special today for someone less fortunate. Local school kids made Valentine’s cards for me with heartfelt messages inside. So how to distribute them? Myself and a couple of friends headed down to Brighton and with the help of Domino’s Pizzas we set out to deliver pizza and a card to random homeless people and also treats for their canine companions. Each was gratefully and humbly received. We were presented with a flower by one, and another told us it was the first Valentine’s card he had ever received. They all surprised us by how hungrily they took the pizza out of the box and the gratitude they showed to us as pizza delivery people. That will stay in my mind for a very long time. ![]() On this blustery January day, we see that we are being made to change a word on a fruit juice packet, probably because a committee in Europe thought it would be fun to change it. Who actually cares whether it says ‘made with’ or ‘made from’ except for the people who probably made an absolute fortune doing a 2-year study into the use of the word? Who would have actually taken any notice of it or cared? Why do we not commit our energy to making positive change to people’s long term lives, helping them to change how they feel about their community, their country and their world? What would I like to change if I was in politics? Health and wellbeing, not a study into the number of bubbles from a fizzy drinks bottle that end up tickling your nose but a study into how our communities already (yes I said already) have amazing untapped networks which, if promoted and encouraged to grow, can create so much happiness, health and well being. Funnily enough, just like the old days. Have you ever noticed how on snowy days it’s so much easier to talk to people on the street and ‘break the ice’ so to speak? People don’t want or need to be told what to do, look at all the ‘Pay it Forward’s and random acts of kindness that happen in communities. They don’t have a higher authority setting guidelines, they just put a request out to the local community and they come together, every creed, age, religion working together because they know it will make a lasting positive influence on the people’s hearts and lives that they touch. So if a politician is allowed to listen and act on the local community, change the world with kindness and make the world a healthier place for body and mind, then I’m in. If it’s to decide if the colour red is really red, then I’m washing my hair! Have you made a difference with kindness? Do you want too? I do and I am, as often as I can. I was beginning to feel like I’d been attached to a yo-yo. The week started off with a trip up to London, only to be told my client didn’t realise they were booked in! So I made use of the time and explore London on foot by walking back from Knightsbridge to Victoria. It’s surprising how close everything really is when you start walking. Also on a sad note for me, I lost a family pet, who had become a large part of the Wells family life. I think you only realise how much they affect you when they’re not there anymore. There’s that glance when you move the chair so as not to catch them with it, or that moment as you go to say goodbye as you walk out the door and you remember he’s not there. Who’s going to tidy the slippers left on the floor now! I was lucky enough to have had the honour to share his life and for that I will always be grateful. So what else have I been up to? This week saw me taking my second one-to-one lesson in Kung Fu with the Kung Fu School Crawley. Dave, my instructor, is very patient. I have learnt so much in the first couple of sessions. For me it’s a great new hobby. Kung Fu translates to ‘achievement of man’. It’s helping me focus on the fact that with time and energy, anything can be achieved. You may be wondering what all this has to do with hypnotherapy or the other work that I do? Hypnotherapy is one of many therapies that can help you through the stages of loss. Having someone to talk to when everything seems against you, is like trying to jump that eight foot wall but never quite reaching it, until a friendly pair of hands gives you a lift over. Learning to relax and live in the moment, rather than dwelling on a past that cannot be changed, can be a life changing experience. Let’s see what October’s got in store for us apart from Ghosts and Ghouls… Oh and of course my yearly trip out on my broomstick on the 31st! I was surprised how many people hadn't when I started to talk about it. It is basically about how one good deed deserves another but rather than returning the good deed to the same person, you suggest they do a good deed for someone else. Therefore you 'Pay it Forward'.
Little did I know until the other day that there is a 'Pay it Forward' Foundation. When I described how I'd done such a deed and tweeted about it. I was amazed and extremely honoured to get a message from Charley Johnson, the head of the pif foundation www.pifexperience.org. Let's get 'pif' rippling out across the UK. Just make one kind gesture and watch the ripple grow! Things have been steady growing work-wise and I can't believe it's been two months since I started the company! I'm looking into setting up a training branch at the moment and I have a meeting set up to discuss international clinics. I already have two people on a waiting list even though it's still only a thought in my head at the moment. There are lots of hypnotherapy clients booked in this week. I think they are all trying to squeeze in before my holiday! What's planned for the rest of the week? Thursday I'm up at my Harley Street clinic. Some of the Glamour magazine team are booked in for sports massage as their weekly mileage increases in preparation for the Great Parks half marathon. Their muscles are starting to wonder what's hit them! This is my 'Pay it Forward' moment this week. I have asked them, rather than paying me, to make a donation to MIND - the charity they are running the half marathon for. MIND can then use the money to help many individuals with mental health issues. And the ripple goes on! Don't forget to watch out for my new advert in Sussex Living this month.
